Auditions for the 2017-2018 Season

Upcoming Summer Auditions to be held on June 20th, 21st, and 22nd from 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM, and on August 26th 8:00 AM-12:00 PM. The exact audition date and time slot for each applicant will be emailed one week before the audition, in June and August.

Applications accepted continually. Any opening in the orchestra will be filled by auditions based on the most recent applications submitted. Other than that we hold regular auditions during the summer and in November. If you are interested in joining BYO please email the information below to manager@byoweb.org.

Preparing for the Audition

Strings, Winds, Brass

  • Expect to play a chromatic scale and additional major or minor scale of your choice
  • Expect to play an etude or excerpt from a concerto or piece that demonstrates your skills both technically and expressively with emphasis on tone and intonation.
  • Expect to sight read an excerpt provided at the audition

Percussion

  • Expect to play a composition that demonstrates your skill both technically and expressively with changes in tempo and dynamics.
  • Expect to sight read an excerpt provided at the audition.

BYO auditions take place at Laney College, 900 Fallon Street crossing with 9th Street, Oakland, one block from Lake Merrit BART, where our rehearsals are held. When entering the Laney campus from 9th and Fallon, the music building (G building) is the first one on your right. Turn to your right at the first alleyway (If you go up any stairs, ramps, slopes, hills you have gone too far and missed the alley). The G building entrance is the first door on the right.

Audition usually take approximately 7 (seven) minutes. Please arrive 15-20 minutes early to find the room and warm up. Please note that parking is mostly at meters and you'll need quarters. The BART lot is free on weekends.
